Mexican forces defeated French forces at the battle of Puebla on May 5th 1862

-2000(ish) Mexican troops fended off 6000(ish) French troops


It is NOT Mexicos Independence Day which is celebrated September 16th


Mexican Gold miners in California are considered the first to celebrate Cinco de Mayo


It was not well celebrated nation wide until the 1980's when advertisers started pushing the festive nature of the day


Students in Mexico do not have to attend school on May 5th but it is not widely celebrated throughout Mexico


70 Million pounds of avocados are consumed on Cinco de Mayo
